Aistear
Our school uses Aistear in the infant classes. Aistear is basically learning through play. We invite our infant parents in, first thing in the morning for a half hour one or two weeks per month to man a station of 5 to 6 children, where they explore a theme through play. Themes change monthly or fortnightly. All parents are garda vetted. Theme examples are: The Vet, The Airport, At the Hairdressers. Stations can be based on art, reading, writing, maths, construction, science, baking- actually there is no limit. Parents are given specific vocabulary they are asked to re-inforce within their station during the half hour. At the end of Aistear daily, children are shown photographs of the morning and questioned on what they did and how they did it. They are asked leading questions to help them to think. Ms Dinan’s Senior Infants are doing the Flower Shop Aistear uring March 2021. They are acting in the home corner, making LEGO flower shops, planting seeds in soil, using various items to stamp with to create prints of flowers and writing sentences about flowers too after creating a window flower box. It is great fun and all smelt beautiful thanks to Ms Dinan!
